Demystifying Armor for Motorcycle Jackets

At jackets4bikes we get this question all the time what type of armor is right for my jacket? If you go and ask this question at a dealership or any other okay seller you will get a simple answer double density is king. Some will perhaps take the next step and gee out with little more like "but we also like injection molded cups that are shipping with lots of new top jackets"! We think its best to analyze positives and negatives for each solution (Yes every type of armor has pros and cons).
Before we start we want to clear that this guide doesnt cover motocross armor or independently wearable armor. This guide basically covers the four or five piece armor used in Cordura, lather and mesh jackets used by riders.
So how many types of armors are there for jackets? There are basically 3 basic types. These types are mainly based on type of material used to make armor.

1. Double density foam armor: This type of armor gees in different shapes but they are made using similar technology and all do basically similar job. Our products in double density look as shown below.
Positives of double density armor: It is most easily available armor. It provides basic protection at very effective price. It fits easily in most jackets, it is light weight and does take lot of adjustment once installed.
Negatives of double density armor: It provides very basic protection from impact. Even those which are CE rated (at any level) cant provide the best protection. Excessively bending this type of armor can cause cracks.


2. Injection molded armor: This type of armor is generally made of polycarbonate or equivalent grade of plastic raisin molded into elbow and shoulder protector pieces. The plastic plates are typically lined with foam for additional protection.
Positives of injection molded armor: This type of armor is used is top end jackets. It provides basic very good protection from both impact and abrasion.
Negatives of injection molded armor: This type of armor holds its shape very well. This can cause slight disgefort while wearing the jacket and may require slight adjustment by hand.


3. EVA armor: This type of armor is made of EVA molded into elbow, back and shoulder contour shaped molds.
Positives of EVA armor: This type of armor if built properly provides best protection against surface impact. It also shapes around elbow or shoulder like an extra layer of thick guard. Generally this type of armor doesnt crack if you bend it.
Negatives of EVA armor: This is the heaviest of all types of armor. Some manufacturers play tricks to reduce weight and create empty holes or shape in armor gepromising the safety. This type of armor takes most amount of space inside a jacket. We regemend going a size up if you are interested in using EVA armor.
